Healthy and Happy Cattle
We enjoy providing our cows with a happy life on the farm, respecting their lives and giving thanks for the food that they provide to us in the end.
We believe that the cows should have the opportunity to lead a life full of freedom and safety with fresh clean food, space, and water. They have farm friends in our horse, dogs, and our chickens.
We get our beef cows from local dairies, who cannot use the steers (male cows) to replace their aging milk cows. They are not treated with hormones or antibiotics while they stay with us.
They are brought to the farm and provided free access to fresh grass 24/7 throughout the year. During the winter when the grass does not quite provide enough nutrients, they are provided grass hay and some alfalfa pellets. The grass hay is grown just down the street without pesticides. The alfalfa pellets are sourced from a farm in Culver City, OR.
During the summer and fall months, their grass diet is supplemented by lawn grass clippings, garden scraps, and imperfect fruit from our trees, all grown without pesticides. They enjoy these treats and moo every evening at the gate if we are running late on chores!
We control weeds on our property via hand removal. After more than 20 years, there are few weeds left so thankfully this is easily done! We utilize rotational grazing and composting for our manure. The cows and horse naturally fertilize the pasture as they rotate through the pastures.
